The Mask might be a goofy comedy starring Jim Carrey, but, as CineFix illustrates here in The Mask movie comparison, it's remarkably different from the comic book that inspired it. It is unknown what is behind these masks. However, in Shy Guy's trophy celebration movie in Mario Power Tennis, after Shy Guy trips on one of the steps, his mask falls off, and Luigi sees its face without his mask on and is shocked at the sight. The Shy Guy then quickly puts the mask back on and picks the trophy up, showing it to the audience.

Originally, New Line Cinema hoped The Mask would be a twisted sort of horror comedy since the comic features plenty of 1980s style violence and dark laughs, but instead, it went for full-on comedy inspired by classic cartoons. Plot – Stanley Ipkiss is a shy banker, oppressed by his bitter landlady and by his boss. He finds it incredible that a sexy blonde, Tina Carlyle, wants to open a bank account with him instead of with his colleague Charlie Schumaker. What the woman is actually doing is filming the interior of the bank. She is helping her mobster boyfriend Dorian, who needs money to take over his boss Nico, to rob the bank. One night Charlie invites Stanley to join him and two girls at the Coco Bongo night club, but Stanley gets kicked out of the club and finds himself stuck on a bridge after his car breaks down. Here, in the river, he finds an ancient mask that gives its wearer super powers. Thanks to the mask, Stanley terrifies the landlady and a street gang, he robs the bank before Dorian's men and dances with Tina at the Coco Bongo, making fun of the mobsters.
